VIETNAMESE COFFEE
Hanoi is at the heart of the exceptionally popular coffee culture of Vietnam. Originally introduced into Vietnam by the French, the morning cup of Ca Phe quickly caught on with the local population.
From traditional sidewalk cafes to the new modern style coffee shops, the coffee culture is alive and well from early morning until late at night. Drinkers of all ages can sit for hours over a single cup or glass. You can, however, enjoy quality coffee all over Vietnam.
Trieu Viet Vuong street has possibly more cafes than any other street in Vietnam. From old favourite Café Tho, serving strong, powerful cups, to new, fashionable shops to family-run establishments, all are consistently busy.
As well as the traditional black and white coffee versions, the addition of yoghurt, eggs and even fruits, Vietnamese coffee has developed a taste of its own.
The Local Names of Vietnamese Coffee
To prepare a cup and to give the coffee its unique flavour, coarsely ground blended beans go into a (Phin) drip filter which sits on top of the cup. Pour hot water over the beans and wait as it slowly drips into the cup. Condensed milk sweetens the dark, strong brew. In the north of Vietnam, the name for this is Ca Phe Nau (brown coffee).
Coffee Variations
Yoghurt coffee ( Ca Phe Sua Chua)
Rich and creamy, yoghurt mixes extremely well black coffee.
Egg coffee (Ca Phe Trung)
Probably the most famous of Hanoi’s coffee variations, this dates back to the 1940’s when egg yolks replaced milk, which was scarce. Whip egg yolk with condensed milk into an airy froth and add to the black coffee. A truly delicious flavour. Try it at the café which invented it, Café Giang, perched on a tiny stool.
Coffee smoothie (Sinh To Ca Phe)
An unlikely combination, trendy juice shops add a touch of Vietnamese coffee to creamy blends of fresh fruit. It’s a healthy combination of caffeine and vitamins.
