The Turbulent History of Vietnam

Vietnam has a long and turbulent history stretching back thousands of years. Various Vietnamese dynasties and kingdoms have risen and fallen through the centuries, with Vietnam often caught between the ambitions of powerful neighbors China and Southeast Asian kingdoms. Despite this, the Vietnamese people have maintained a strong sense of national identity and pride.

Ancient Vietnam

The early history of what is now Vietnam can be traced back to the Bronze Age Đông Sơn culture which emerged in the Red River valley around 2000 BCE. Advanced metallurgical skills allowed the Đông Sơn to thrive and their distinctive drums have been found over a wide area. After a period under Chinese domination as a province of the Qin dynasty in the 3rd century BCE, Vietnam regained its independence in the following centuries. Ancient Vietnamese kingdoms gradually expanded from their heartland in the Red River basin southwards as the frontier was pushed deeper into the Mekong delta region.

Chinese Domination Resisted

For much of its history, Vietnam found itself having to resist attempts by its much larger neighbor China to dominate and annex Vietnamese territories into the Chinese empire. This led to many epic battles as dynasties like the Ly, Tran, Later Le and Nguyen resisted Chinese invasions. Brilliant generals like Ly Thuong Kiet and Tran Hung Dao achieved stunning victories against numerically superior Chinese forces and left an enduring mark on the national consciousness. Despite periodic Chinese occupations that could last decades, the Vietnamese refusal to be assimilated allowed an independent Vietnamese state to always reemerge.
The legendary Trung sisters epitomize the indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people in throwing off the Chinese yoke. In 40 CE, the Trung sisters led a revolt that briefly liberated Vietnam from Han dynasty rule that had been established over the previous century. Their short-lived insurrection inspired future generations to resist domination by invaders. After ten centuries of repression under Imperial China’s rule, Ngo Quyen finally achieved full independence for Vietnam when he decisively defeated the Southern Han fleet on the Bach Dang river in 938 CE, ending 1000 years of Chinese domination.

French Colonization

For several centuries Vietnam enjoyed independence and expanded its borders under successive dynasties like the Lê and Nguyễn. This ended in the mid-19th century when France annexed southern Vietnam to become part of French Indochina in 1862. After a prolonged struggle lasting decades, French control gradually extended to the whole country by the end of the 19th century. Under French rule, some modernization of Vietnam occurred but significant control of the economy remained in French hands with the Vietnamese denied access to positions of power in their own country. Resentment grew under harsh French exploitation, leading to nascent independence movements.

Japan seized control of Vietnam during World War 2 after swiftly defeating the French colonial administration in 1940. The communist-led Viet Minh resistance organization under Ho Chi Minh emerged during this period, formidably armed and battle-hardened after fighting the Japanese. With the end of the war in 1945, the Viet Minh sought Vietnamese independence but clashed with the returning French authorities who attempted to reassert control over the country. After nearly a decade of bloody conflict, the Viet Minh secured victory against French forces culminating in victory over besieged French forces at Dien Bien Phu in 1954. The subsequent Geneva Accords resulted in Vietnam’s temporary partition at the 17th parallel pending promised elections intended to peacefully reunify the country.

America Enters the Vietnam War

Vietnam was not to see peace. Simmering conflict soon escalated into open warfare as the communist North Vietnam. Which supported the Viet Cong’s armed insurgency against the U.S backed South Vietnam regime. As the Vietnam War intensified in the 1960s, the U.S. increasingly committed combat troops and resources to prop up the unstable Saigon government. Despite its military and economic superiority, the U.S. found victory elusive against North Vietnamese troops and determined Viet Cong guerillas. Bloody battles like that of Ia Drang in 1965 demonstrated the difficulties facing American forces. Rising domestic discontent and American casualties ultimately sapped political will resulting in the Paris Peace Accords of 1973 which set the stage for the United States exit from Vietnam.

North Vietnamese Victory and Aftermath

In the two years following the peace accords, North Vietnam built up its forces and launched a massive assault against South Vietnam in 1975. South Vietnamese units rapidly disintegrated before the onslaught allowing North Vietnamese troops and tanks to blitz towards Saigon. Scenes of helicopters rescuing Americans and South Vietnamese from the U.S Embassy rooftop on April 30 1975 showed the final bitter defeat for American policy. Vietnam was finally reunified under communist rule on July 2 1975 as jubilant North Vietnamese tanks crashed through the gates of Independence Palace in Saigon, ending decades of conflict. Free walking tours Hanoi would bring you memorable experiences of Vietnam history.
